Building Foundations
& Slabs 101

Traditional CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) foundation wall and footer is the choice if you are planning a raised floor with a crawl space. This type of foundation is also used for raised porches which are then backfilled and then finished with a concrete slab. A footer and CMU foundation also provides better flexibility when building on a sloping site.

Monolithic Slab, also known as a Turn-Down Slab,  take it’s name from a one-pour design, being cast in place as one single component. “Turn-Down Slabs” are well suited for many different types of buildings and are a common construction method in our area. They can be more economical than the traditional CMU and footer foundations because they get your project ready to build in less time.

  • Dig the foundation trench according to the approved design and dimensions.
  • Create a level and firm base for the foundation.
  • Construct forms or molds to define the shape and dimensions of the foundation.
  • Ensure that the forms are properly aligned, secured, and leveled.
  • Install reinforcing steel bars (rebar) for added strength.
  • Pour concrete into the trench to create footings, which distribute the load of the structure and prevent settling.
  • Consolidate the concrete to remove air bubbles and achieve proper compaction.
  • Allow the concrete to cure for a specified period to achieve its desired strength.
  • Protect the curing concrete from extreme weather conditions that could impact the curing process.
